Business in OrustOrust IndustryThe "national" economy of Orust is mainly based on the yacht and boat building industry. Yachts, boats and the seaOrust is known world-wide for the production of yachts and boats of various size and make. Every second yacht exported from Sweden is manufactured on Orust. Öppna Varv (open yards), the largest Scandinavian fair of yachts and boats floating is organized every year. For three days in august the yards and keys of Ellös, Kungsviken, Henån and Vindön are open to public. Orust yachts and boats stands for first rate quality and design and includes names as Hallberg-Rassy, Najad, Nord West and Malö, names famous and respected all over the world. The boatyards also leads to other connected businesses in maintenance, trimmings and accessories. The tourist industryThe sea also means tourism. There is lots to experience on Orust, and there are almost as many tourist companies as there are experiences on offer. Visit restaurants, paddle a sea kayak or listen to music. Or why not combine business with pleasure, and hold a conference in the setting of the archipelago? Bästkusten i Bohuslän AB is the tourist company representing Orust, Stenungsund and Tjörn. It runs the tourist offices and is responsible for marketing the region - read more at www.bastkusten.se. The municipality also operates some of the most popular harbours in Bohuslän, with a total of around 17,000 nights spent in guest harbours per season. In the old days the area was dominated by fishing, with herring being brought ashore and dried all the way along the coast. There are not many fishing boats left now, but the island is home to two of Sweden's biggest fish-processing companies: MP-produkter and Paul Mattsson. Herring is filleted for delivery to Abba in Lysekil, for example, or the canning industry at Klädesholmen in Tjörn, where it is preserved in various ways. Breadth and depthThere are many other sectors which give the island's economy immense depth. Several companies occupy leading positions within their respective areas. Examples include Marinfloc, which manufactures purification systems for vessels to prevent oil discharge; Swedeponic, which supplies fresh herbs and salad in jars as well as its expertise in building large greenhouses; and MiniCrosser, which sells and customises electric scooters, and in just a few years has become the biggest company of its type in Sweden. There are also many service and trading companies, one example being the discount store Göksäter, with its textiles, clothes and tools attracting large crowds all year round. ![]() |
