Other public services

Education

The schools of Orust are spread out over the island. There are, for example, junior schools and secondary schools in several different places. Henån, Ellös and Svanesund have upper secondary classes. There are also a number of private schools.

Basic education for adults and lessons in basic Swedish for immigrants are supplied by the municipality's Adult Education programme.

In addition to the compulsory education programme there is a special municipal music school, which is very active and has become an important feature of the island's cultural life.

High school education for our pupils is provided in Uddevalla or Stenungsund. The pupils can choose which of these two towns suit them best.

Child care

Orust is investing in its child care programme in terms of both quantity and quality. The child care programme includes pre-schools, family nurseries and open pre-schools. The overriding purpose of the child care programme is to work alongside parents to help them bring up their children in the proper way, to satisfy the various care needs, and to support and stimulate their development.

Family day nurseries are provided and spread out over the island and account for half of the island's child care facilities. The Orust municipality also has a positive attitude to alternative forms of child care. The overriding ambition, of course, is to be able to meet all needs as soon as possible

Care for senior citizens and disabled people

The municipality's care programme for its senior citizens and disabled people is based on the objective that those in need of special care and service should be encouraged to live an active and meaningful life, while at the same time being responsible for themselves. This means, among other things, that the municipality and county provides home sick care and home nursing services to make it possible for most people to remain in their own home. Special transport facilities are provided for elderly people and disabled people with physical and mental handicaps.

There are also pensioner apartments in Henån, Ellös and Svanesund, and a block of service houses in Ellös and Svanesund. Both Henån and Ellös have old people's homes.

Public health service

The medical care centres in Henån, Svanesund and Ellös form the basis of the Orust municipality's public health service programme. These centres have for example general practitioner services, district nurse services with child care and maternity welfare centres. The home nursing service is also attached to these medical care centres.
