Welcome!Western Sweden's biggest islandOrust is Sweden's third-largest island, has just over 15,000 residents (2004) in the winter, and is situated in the heart of Bohuslän between the bridges at Skåpesund to the south and Nötesund to the north. Here you can stroll around old fishing villages or follow beautiful cultural trails. You can take the passenger ferry out to car-free islands. Marvel at the wealth of nature, everything from the majestic North Sea to smiling farmland and extensive forests with sparkling lakes. Combining business with pleasureThe island boasts endless opportunities for an active holiday. Swim in beautiful natural bays, from rocks warmed by the sun or from man-made bathing places, some of which are suitable for the disabled. Sail out to sea or within the archipelago, beneath the bridges and through the Malö currents, or call at one of our guest harbours. Paddle a sea kayak, either by yourself or with an expert instructor. Play golf on some of Sweden's most beautiful courses. Hold a conference in a quiet and intimate setting. Stay overnight in a cottage or guest house. Visit cultural monuments such as Hagadösen, a prehistoric stone structure, and the various museums, and see a 10,000-year-old piece of chewing gum! Experience the music of Taube (composer, troubadour) and open-air theatre, dance in parks or listen to traditional songs, rock and blues at any number of indoor venues. Admire art in the galleries of the island's many artists. A long tradition of boatsThe boatbuilding tradition on Orust has its roots in the Viking period. The modern-day boat industry shows off its wares on the last weekend of August each year at Öppna varv, Scandinavia's largest floating boat show.
